Our Philosophy

At B David Levine Design, we believe true luxury lives in the details. It’s in the feel of a door handle as you walk through a room, the way natural light softens a corner, and how a space gently reflects the personality of the person who lives or works there. Our design approach is timeless, but never rigid. We evolve with our clients, shaping spaces that feel alive, intentional, and beautifully personal.

We value collaboration rooted in trust, creativity guided by honesty, and a commitment to making things that truly last. Every project is a conversation - a shared journey built on curiosity, care, and the belief that great design should feel both soulful and smart. We draw from a global palette, honor fine craftsmanship, and always lead with purpose. Because in the end, our goal is simple: to create spaces that feel just right, and only get better with time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wallcovering
What sets B David Levine apart from other design firms?
B David Levine does architectural design, interior design, and product design and sources some of the finest lines never brought to the west coast in his showroom, handling both residential and commercial projects. B David Levine is a creator of environments that balance art, architecture, and emotional intelligence. His work is defined by a deep, hands-on engagement throughout the process and a commitment to creating homes that are as functional as they are enduring. Unlike firms that approach design as styling or decoration, David treats each project as a work of art with lasting value. His design philosophy isn’t driven by trend or ego-it’s driven by the belief that beauty, purpose, and longevity can and should coexist in every space. He brings decades of experience across residential, commercial, and product design, guiding each project from the first sketch to the final dish in the cabinet.
How does the design process begin?
It begins with a meeting-not just to discuss the project, but to understand whether there’s a creative chemistry. David listens deeply to your expectations, goals, and lifestyle, often uncovering key insights you may not have realized were important. After initial discussions and project assessment, we establish a framework that includes budgets, deliverables, and a proposed scope. From there, we begin conceptual development-exploring design directions, refining the vision, and coordinating with necessary team members (contractors, fabricators, engineers) to build a strong, collaborative foundation. On-site visits and vendor oversight continue throughout to ensure the result is as intended.
Do I need to have a clear vision before hiring a designer?
No-but it helps to have clarity about your intentions. Our role is to guide you toward a cohesive vision through exploration and discovery. Your style may evolve as the process unfolds, and that’s expected. But the clearer you are about your lifestyle, needs, and expectations, the more targeted and successful the outcome will be.
Can you work with my existing architect or contractor?
Yes-provided we find a shared focus and professional chemistry. The best results happen when everyone involved works collaboratively, with mutual respect and clarity of roles. We’re happy to join an existing team, or help build one from the ground up.
What if I want to keep certain existing pieces?
That’s absolutely fine, as long as we know from the beginning. Integrating heirlooms or functional pieces requires intentional design choices, and their presence will affect the overall direction of the space. We’ll advise on how to honor what you love without compromising the whole.
What is full-service interior design?
Full-service means that we handle every detail-from initial concepts and architectural integration to furniture design, material sourcing, project management, and final installation. Whether you need construction drawings or a custom rug, we design it or source it, and we ensure everything is implemented to the highest standard. It’s a comprehensive process designed to remove stress and elevate the end result.
How do you handle purchasing and installation?
We prefer to be the purchasing agent for everything that goes into the space. That ensures accuracy in specifications, optimal pricing, and quality control. We inspect every item prior to delivery and oversee installation to confirm that everything arrives in perfect condition and is placed exactly as intended. This not only protects the design vision-it saves you time, expense, and frustration.
What types of spaces do you design?
We design residential, commercial, hospitality, and retail environments-ranging from classical to futuristic. Our work spans full estates, vacation homes, retail displays, and everything in between. We don’t specialize in a style-we specialize in understanding the unique needs of each client and crafting environments that express that identity through space, material, and form.
Do you work on remote or international projects?
Yes. We work across the U.S. and internationally through virtual consultations, digital design packages, and trusted local partnerships. While nothing replaces being on-site, we’ve developed systems that allow us to manage every detail remotely when needed, without sacrificing quality or cohesion.
How involved do I need to be during the process?
That’s entirely up to you. Some clients want to be involved in every decision. Others want a turnkey experience. We tailor the process to your level of comfort and availability-but generally, the more collaborative the relationship, the more personal and precise the result.
Do you offer design-only services?
Yes. For clients who wish to manage their own implementation, we offer full design packages-including drawings, material specs, and sourcing information. We also offer consultation-only engagements, should you simply need guidance at a specific phase.
How are budgets developed and managed?
We begin by discussing your goals, needs, and comfort zone. From there, we define a structure-either fixed fees, hourly billing, or cost-plus-based on what makes sense for your project. Budgets are refined as the design evolves, and we maintain full transparency throughout. That said, it's important to understand that the level of quality and detail we provide does not lend itself to arbitrary numbers-each project is unique, and so is its financial structure.
What investment should I expect for a complete space?
We don’t give generic figures because design isn’t generic. Costs vary based on size, customization, timeline, location, and construction requirements. That said, high-quality design does require a serious investment-typically starting in the six-figure range for whole homes or complex renovations. What matters most is value: what you’re getting, how long it will last, and how well it supports your life.
Do you charge flat fees or hourly rates?
We offer both-along with hybrid structures-depending on the project. Some clients prefer a flat fee for predictability, others appreciate the flexibility of hourly billing. We’ll recommend a model that fits your scope, timeline, and style of engagement.
Can you help during new construction?
Absolutely-and the earlier, the better. Being involved from the architectural stage allows us to align layout, flow, lighting, and finishes from the start. It ensures that the design is not simply layered on top of the construction-it’s embedded into the foundation of the space.
Do you source custom or exclusive furnishings?
Yes-and it’s one of the things we’re best known for. We work with master artisans, European ateliers, and trade-only showrooms to create or source pieces that are not available to the general public. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind light fixture or a full suite of custom case goods, our goal is always the same: timeless quality, not mass-produced décor.
What happens if I change my mind mid-project?
That’s part of the process. Design evolves. If your needs or preferences shift, we’ll guide you through the impact-what can be changed, what’s already been committed, and what that means for time and budget. Our goal is to remain flexible while keeping the project on track and aligned with your vision.
How long does a typical project take?
Timelines vary depending on complexity. Smaller projects may take 4–6 months, while larger builds or whole-home designs often run 9–18 months or more. Custom furniture, permitting, and contractor schedules can also affect timing. We’ll create a timeline at the outset, and adjust as needed with clear updates.
Do you offer virtual consultations or e-design?
Yes. While we always prefer to experience the space in person, we offer virtual consultations, remote design packages, and full-service guidance for clients outside our area or seeking digital options. We adapt our tools to ensure the same level of design integrity and personal service.
What should I prepare for our first meeting?
Bring anything that helps us understand you-photos, floorplans, mood boards, goals, constraints, and inspirations. Be ready to share your lifestyle, your needs, your budget expectations (even rough ones), and your timelines. If you already have a team (contractor, architect, etc.), include them in the conversation early. The more context we have, the more focused and rewarding the process becomes.
